Grooming Supply & Detergent Drive

In 1991, beloved community member John “Spanke” Studer turned his birthday into a mission of love by hosting the first-ever Toilet Paper Party—gathering essential hygiene supplies, especially toilet paper, for the residents of AIDS Services of Dallas (ASD). As the need grew, so did the parties. Spanke later added a fall edition, ensuring year-round support for our residents. Deeply rooted in the Dallas LGBTQ+ community, Spanke was not only a familiar face in local legacy bars but also served on the ASD Board in the early ’90s. Many of you may remember the laughter, joy, and purpose of attending one of Spanke’s unforgettable parties. Though we lost him in October 2011, his generous spirit lives on through these continued efforts.

At the same time, another quiet legacy of compassion was building. Since the 1990s and early 2000s, Jesuit Preparatory School has stood as a steadfast partner in serving the residents of ASD through their detergent drives. With each donation, students, families, and faculty have helped ensure our residents have access to something so simple, yet so essential—clean clothes. Their long-standing commitment has brought comfort, dignity, and consistency to the lives of hundreds of individuals and families who call ASD home.

Today, we continue both of these legacies with renewed energy and purpose.
